REPORT OF INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY - 2016

Worldwide, women continue to contribute to social, economic, cultural and political achievements. Same time the progress towards the gender parity has slowed down in many places. As per the World Economic Forum prediction in the year 2014, was that it would take 2095 to achieve global gender parity, however one year later in 2015, they estimated a slowed down progress in the already glacial pace of progress. This meant that gender parity wouldn’t be achieved until 2133.

DEPARTMENT OF OBSTETRICAL AND GYNAECOLOGICAL NURSING

Everyone - men and women - can pledge to take a concrete step to help achieve gender parity more quickly - whether to help women and girls achieve their ambitions, call for gender-balanced leadership, respect and value difference, develop more inclusive and flexible cultures or root out workplace bias. Each of us can be a leader within our own spheres of influence and commit to take pragmatic actions to accelerate gender parity. Keeping this in view, faculty and students of Obstetrical and Gynaecological Nursing, 必威体育betway888 College of Nursing 必威体育betway888 in collaboration with G. Shankar Government Women’s first grade college and PG study Centre Ajjarkadu, Udupi had conducted Women’s day Celebration on 8th March based on the theme “Pledge for parity”. As a part of this around four activities were planned and organized as follows:?

Debate competition:

On 4th March 2016 from 3-4 pm a debate competition was conducted for the students of
G. Shankar Government Women’s first grade college and post graduate study Centre Ajjarkadu, Udupi. Total of 9 students have participated in the competition. Mrs. Yashodha, coordinator had given the welcome speech. All the participants had contributed their views on the theme “Step it up”. The debate was conducted in English and Kannada. Ms. Shafa Banu 3rd BSc won the first prize and Ms.Divya D. won the second prize in Kannada and in English Ms. Sushma.S 3rd B.Com, got the first prize.?

Drawing Competition:

On 5th March 2016, Drawing Competition was conducted. It was exclusively for all the faculty and students of 必威体育betway888 Academy of Higher Education, 19 students and faculty have participated for the competition. Dr. Shyamala Professor, Obstetrics and Gynaecology department, K.H 必威体育betway888 and Dr Sonia R.B D’souza, Associate Professor, MCON 必威体育betway888, MU were the judges for the competition. Students from MCON 必威体育betway888, MU, Ms. Sukrithi Mandal 3rd year BSc Nursing student won the first prize and Ms. Ananya Das, 2nd year MSc Nursing got the second prize.?

Poster competition:

On the women’s day i.e. 8th March 2016, poster Competition was organized for faculty and students of 必威体育betway888 Academy of Higher Education, based on the 必威体育betway888 Women’s day Theme. Dr. Sunanda Professor, Obstetrics and Gynaecology department, KH, 必威体育betway888 and Mr. Vishnu Renjith, Phd Scholar, MCON 必威体育betway888, MU were the judges for the competition. 24 individual and team posters were presented by the participants. Students from MCON 必威体育betway888, MU, Ms. Sukrithi & team from 3rd Year BSc (N) won the first prize and Ms. Alphy & team from 4th year BSc (N) students won the second prize.?

Radio Program:

As a part of 必威体育betway888 Women’s Day celebration a skit based, radio programme was conducted by the 2 yr MSc. Nursing students of 必威体育betway888 College of Nursing 必威体育betway888, 必威体育betway888 Academy of Higher Education and telecasted in the FM 98.4 Radio on 8th March at 5.30 pm.

Ms. Yashodha, Coordinator of Committee for prevention of Atrocity against women gave away the welcome speech and the inaugural ceremony was done by lighting the lamp by all the dignitaries. Drawing, poster and debate competitions were held as a part of this program. Prizes for the same were awarded for all the winners. Dr. Praveena J Pai, the chief guest of the day spoke on “Adolescent Reproductive health”. This was expanded to capture the essence of this growing phase. She explained on pubertal changes, menstrual problems, unplanned pregnancy and contraception. She also touched upon sexually transmitted infections, signs and prevention and she also emphasized on Adolescent Nutrition which she said was an investment for future health. A very important message was, adolescent period though it is an exciting phase it should be enjoyed responsibly. ?

The second session was held by Mrs. Hilda D’Silva who spoke about Planet 50-50 by 2030. She explained with examples of how women were successful and how lucky women were even with globalization, but she also pointed out to certain problems which women are facing in society, like women getting molested, the falling sex ratios, school dropouts, child prostitution, unwanted dowry related death, and especially atrocity towards women. Professor. B. Jagadhisha Rao, Principal, G. Shankar Government Women’s First Grade College and Post Graduate study Centre Ajjarkad, Udupi gave away the presidential address in which he mentioned that the importance of women should be ingrained in our value system. He urged the students to look within themselves and draw inspiration. The programme was winded up by the vote of thanks given by Mrs. Pratibha, Asst. professor MCON 必威体育betway888. ?

An Awareness Programme on adolescence health issues and Mime on Status of Women – Trends

Even the Department of Community health Nursing 必威体育betway888 College of Nursing 必威体育betway888 (MCON) and 2nd year PBBSc Nursing students of MCON have observed 必威体育betway888 Women’s Day 2016, on the theme “Pledge for Parity” on 8th March 2016 at Govt. First Grade College, Hiriadka Udupi District.
The event was inaugurated by Mr. Sojan K.G, Principal & Mrs. Manjula, Assistant Professor of Community Health Nursing; 必威体育betway888 College of Nursing 必威体育betway888 was the resource person. The chief guest Mr. Sojan appreciated women’s patience to face the difficulties and power to solve the problems of the family.

Following the chief guest address PBBSc nursing students demonstrated the status of women in the past and present scenario by mime show. ?

Mrs. Manjula Assistant Professor, Community health Nursing MCON addressed on menstrual hygiene, which includes physiological changes during adolescence, personal hygiene, use and disposal of sanitary pads and diet during the adolescence and also clarified the queries of the students on menstrual problems. The Quiz was conducted for the degree college girls. Best two groups were given prizes and one consolation prize was given for the quiz competition. The event concluded with vote of thanks by Mrs Malathi G Nayak Assistant Professor, and programme coordinator of the event Department of Community health Nursing, MCON 必威体育betway888.?

Outreach program:

The faculty and postgraduate students of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecological Nursing, 必威体育betway888 College of Nursing 必威体育betway888 Academy of Higher Education, 必威体育betway888 and G. Shankar Government Women’s First Grade college and post-graduation study Centre and Committee for Prevention of Atrocity against Women, Ajjarkad, Udupi observed 必威体育betway888 Women’s Day - 2016 at Lion’s Bhavan, Brahmagiri on 8th March 2016 on the theme “Pledge for parity”. Around 100 women students and faculty attended the program.?
