The Departments of Microbiology, Pathology, and Biochemistry, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, in collaboration with Becton Dickinson (BD) and Siemens Healthineers, conducted a two-day Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Workshop on ISO 20658:2023 – Sample Collection & Transport as part of an Industry-Academia Collaboration initiative. The event was held on 3rd and 4th April 2025.

The CME on day 1 began with an ice-breaking session and overview by Dr Srinivas CN, Consultant – Laboratory Medicine, BD, followed by lectures on key ISO clauses by Dr Shwetha, Medical Affairs Manager, BD, and Dr Srinivas CN, focusing on critical aspects of pre-analytical processes in laboratory medicine. Dr B. Unnikrishnan, Dean, KMC Mangalore, presided over the inauguration. Interactive group activities engaged participants in understanding policy formulation, identifying non-compliance, and applying checklist-based quality practices. A panel discussion followed.

Day 2 featured the hands-on workshop, during which participants were divided into batches and rotated through practical demonstration stations covering venous blood collection, arterial blood gas (ABG) sampling, deep venous access and blood culture collection, and urine sample collection. Each station was led by experts from BD, offering hands-on exposure to ensure precision and adherence to international quality standards in sample collection.
The workshop saw enthusiastic participation from laboratory technicians and staff across microbiology, pathology, and biochemistry departments.

This event underscored KMC Mangalore’s continued commitment to quality in diagnostics, capacity building, and industry collaboration for better patient outcomes.
