On January 22, 2025, the 必威体育betway888 Institute of Communication (MIC) came alive with vibrant festivities as it hosted MAHE’s first-ever Pongal celebration. The event aimed to bring students and faculty together in a joyous tribute to Tamil Nadu’s rich cultural heritage, offering a glimpse into the traditions and festivities of the harvest festival.
The celebrations began with the traditional preparation of chakkara pongal on the college grounds, led by Professors C. Manikandan, Manjula Venkataraghavan, Kavita Nagasampige, and a team of enthusiastic student volunteers. The sweet aroma of freshly made pongal filled the air, setting a festive tone for the day. The campus was beautifully decorated with palm leaves, mango leaves and flowers leaving the students in awe.
The esteemed presence of MIC’s Director, Dr. Padma Rani, all program heads, and faculty members added to the significance of the occasion.
The main highlight of the event was the engaging Zamindaar skit by Kalamanch, MIC’s drama club which showcased various traditional games as well as other festivities that mark Pongal celebrations in Tamil Nadu. The skit featured Silambattam, a form of Tamil martial arts, offering an insightful glimpse into Tamil culture and heritage.
The cultural vibrancy continued with mesmerizing dance performances by Meraki, MIC’s dance club. The audience was enthralled by energetic displays of Kummi dance, Karagattam, Kuthu, and even Bihu and Bhangra, celebrating the diverse folk traditions of India.
Adding to the excitement, students participated in traditional Pongal games such as Balloon Leg Race, Sack Race, Rangoli-making competition, and Uriyadi bringing a sense of joy and camaraderie to the event. A taste of traditional Pongal added warmth to the celebration, as everyone went to grab a bite, making them feel a deeper connection to the festival.
Unplugged, MIC’s music club, impressed the joyous crowd with soulful performances, creating an enchanting atmosphere. The festivities concluded with a lively DJ night, where students danced their hearts out, making it a night to remember.
MAHE’s first Pongal celebration at MIC was a resounding success, fostering cultural appreciation and community spirit. The event beautifully encapsulated the essence of Pongal, leaving students and faculty alike with cherished memories of Tamil Nadu’s rich traditions. In this Karnataka town, the cherished chant resonating across Tamil Nadu - “Pongalo Pongal”, echoed throughout MIC, uniting everyone in a celebration to honour the harvest and express gratitude to the Sun God. MIC, yet again, reflected its inclusive and vibrant spirit, leaving everyone smiling and their hearts warm as the event came to an end. The event was orchestrated by Manikandan C., Assistant Professor, the Cultural Coordinator, and the Students’ Cultural Committee who played a pivotal role in ensuring its success.
